Essay / Beowulf: Film versus Original - 670
The poem Beowulf was written between 700 and 750 AD by an unknown author set in Denmark and Sweden, otherwise known as Scandinavia. The original Beowulf only exists in one copy and was badly damaged by fire. The poem was an epic with many Christian references throughout the poem. In the poem, Grendel attacks the Danish people at night because of the noisy celebrations at Herot (mead hall), which drive them mad with rage, bringing death and destruction. Beowulf kills Grendel and his mother, then returns to his lands to later become king of the Geats. In the 2007 film, Beowulf kills Grendel, is seduced by Grendel's mother, lies about killing her, and becomes king of the Danes. The main unexpected part of the movie was that Grendel was Hrothgar's son, as the dragon was Beowulf's son. This makes sense, it explains why Grendel and the dragon exist and belong in the entire Beowulf story. Grendel is Hrothgar's curse, which explains why he is more than relieved when Beowulf brings back Grendel's head as proof of his death. The dragon is Beowulf's sin, which occurs when one of the people takes the horn from the swamp where it lives. While trying to kill the dragon, Beowulf puts himself in danger by cutting his arm to reach the heart. Both the dragon and Beowulf fall and are on the shore when the dragon transforms into a golden human form before being swept into the sea. What was expected was for Beowulf to kill Grendel with his bare hands, without weapons , without armor, but in the film he fought completely naked. As for Grendel's mother wanting revenge on Beowulf for killing her only son, he tries to kill her only to find that he is powerless against her. Also for the dragon...... middle of paper...... The film version makes a lot more sense than the poem explaining why Grendel was a curse to the Danes. In the poem we only know that Grendel attacks the Danes, because he does not like the loud noises they make while rejoicing and celebrating. It is not mentioned why Grendel is there, only that he died from Cain and evil. The film gives more of an explanatory story as to why the creatures are there in the first place. The dragon only attacked them because someone took the golden horn that Beowulf gave him. Which broke the pact she and Beowulf had made. I liked Beowulf better in the movie because he was portrayed more as an epic hero. In the movie, he kills the dragon alone, without any help, and he sacrifices his arm to reach the dragon's heart to kill it. Rather than in the poem he is injured and Wiglaf kills the dragon.
