In the last chapter of Siddhartha's life, he faced various obstacles and events. These events transformed him into an enlightened and competent man. In Herman Hesse's Siddhartha, he begins as a hearty and well-fed young man. Little by little, he transforms into a man of desolation trying to regain consciousness and reclaim reality. Through peace, conflict, despair and salvation, Siddhartha is enlightened and strengthened to create a life full of content. We aspire to live a life without food shortages, disease, shelter and conflict. There are two sides to everything: peace and conflict, happiness or sadness, and poverty or wealth. Siddhartha lived on the privileged and auspicious side where he was blinded by the realisms of life. Siddhartha was one of the lucky few to be advantaged and privileged enough to live in a small, thriving community. “They all loved Siddhartha, he brought joy to all, he delighted them.” (Page 4: lines 20-21) In this community, Siddhartha was a charismatic and striking individual, whom everyone longed to meet. Times were peaceful and healthy for Siddhartha. “One day, when Siddhartha joins the gods, people will follow him” (page 5: line 16). Although this is not specifically referring to peacemaking, I feel like this quote has a deeper meaning. Siddhartha not only had noble currency and appearance, but he also had a character and reputation that led others to desire to be like him. This status leads me to admit that he had a life of extravagance and reconciliation, which are the assets of peace. "Siddhartha grew up in --- the Brahmin's handsome son, the young falcon." The initiation process allows us, as readers, to fully immerse ourselves in the characters' encounters, conflicts, and paths.
