  • Essay / Brave New World by Aldous Huxley - 849

Brave New World is a book written by Aldous Huxley in 1932. This novel has been praised and condemned over time. This calls into question the way society is run today; the individual is sacrificed for the state and science is the primary goal of control. This book is a masterpiece of science fiction but also of dystopian literature. The members of the society live a dehumanized life and everything in the society is negative due to the interference of a higher power. It is evident that today's America is evolving into a world state, just like in the book. A few aspects that change the ways the World State operates are religion, love/marriage, and personal pleasure/indulgence. Religion has been abolished in Brave New World. “God in the safe and Ford on the shelves.” (231). People believed that they could be independent of God because they had youth and prosperity until the end. There was no need for God in their lives because they were controlled by hatred of loneliness; therefore, they never felt alone. Why should they use a substitute for the desires and distractions of youth when they never fail? Instead of turning to God when dilemmas arise, they turn to Soma for relief from the facts. During Bernard and Mustapha Mond's conversation, Mustapha read an extract from Cardinal Newman's book. “We are not our own masters. We are God's property. (232). People didn't like the idea of being controlled and dependent on something out of sight. This is ironic, because the Seven World Controllers have manipulated society's thoughts and actions through hypnopaedia. Hundreds of years ago, people didn't want to believe in God because people change. In the World State, it was not common to talk about God and religion. In America, middle of paper, they were starting to get involved in promiscuity. 2% of teenagers have had sex before their 12th birthday, while 71% of 19-year-olds have had sex in America. (Facts about the sexual and reproductive health of American adolescents) TV shows and movies promote licentious behavior, such as the movie Friends with Benefits. It is evident that America is evolving into the global state of Brave New World. The book had no religion or marriage. Although America still has them, they are slowly disappearing. Additionally, the main goal was to keep the characters busy and increase consumption, which is exactly what America is doing today. America is changing before our eyes, and everyone is too busy with other things to even notice. Works CitedHuxley, Aldous. Brave New World. New York: Harper Perennial Modern Classics, 2006. Print.
