This type of stigma occurs when a group of people is singled out because of particular characteristics. This results in discrimination against the group and social isolation occurs (Kwait, Types of Stigma). A good example of this is the age discrimination that people with Alzheimer's disease often face before diagnosis. The best example of this type is Josie. Even though she loses her driving privileges for safety reasons, she feels targeted. She loses her sense of independence. His biggest concern about losing his license is not being able to come and go whenever he wants. This will limit his socialization. She is very active in her church and this is also a concern. How will she get to church if she can't drive herself (Cookson, 2009). Any of these types of stigma would be difficult to bear. From the patient's perspective, the impact would depend on the stage of Alzheimer's disease (AD). People who are more advanced are probably not affected as hard as people early in the disease. Patients with early Alzheimer's disease are still independent and still maintain these social connections. As the disease progresses and certain changes occur in social life, the patient is affected by
