Model of inclusion in classrooms; Yes or no?ProblemThe inclusion of all students in classrooms has been a recurring problem for twenty-five years (Noll, 2013). The controversy is: Should special education students be placed in an inclusion setting or should they be placed in a special education classroom? If the answer is yes, that all special education students should be placed in inclusion, then what should the inclusion model look like? Every student should receive a free and appropriate education. According to the Individual Education Act (IDEA), all students should be placed in the least restrictive learning environment (Noll, 2013). Those who support an inclusion model for all students argue that students with disabilities should be placed in an environment of inclusion. with the idea that all special education students will benefit from an inclusive setting with their general education peers. An environment of inclusion will ensure academic growth and social growth. Placing special education students in a general education classroom would also allow students to respect and accept students who are different. Students should be placed in an environment of inclusion as much as possible (Noll, 2013). Mara Sapon-Shevin's Inclusion Model supports the idea that students should not be categorized based on their disability, there should be a healthy and nurturing classroom culture that promotes acceptance of all students , regardless of their differences in religion, race or disability (Noll, 2013). Sapon–Shevin states that when students are uncomfortable around their peers who are different from them, this situation can be a teaching moment for the teacher, in other words, educating the students about other people's differences, not just disabilities, b...... middle of paper ...... support staff must support them. I am an independent teacher and I know the needs of students and the behaviors they can adopt. Over the years of teaching in a self-contained environment to students with moderate to severe cognitive disabilities, as well as medical needs, I have learned medical procedure and how to manage behaviors while teaching General has no experience in any of these areas. Leadership training should be implemented on IEPs as well as modifications and accommodations for general education teachers. General education teachers should also be trained to use the experience of special education teachers in modified, accommodative, and differentiated instruction. We are a team and the goal we work for is that all of our students on our campus succeed, whether they are general education or special education..
