  • Essay / The vile aspect of society in Cyrano De Bergerac by...

Society tends to misjudge people based on their appearance rather than their personality. We see it in the play Cyrano De Bergerac by Edmond Rostand. In which Roxane represents this ignoble aspect of society. Roxane is attracted to Christian because of his looks, and to Cyrano because of his looks. Society's misjudgment of people causes oppression of an individual and it is oppression and misjudgment of character that gives rise to self-consciousness. Cyrano shows this self-awareness by helping Christian. Such oppression or self-consciousness helps form magnificent characteristic attributes such as those described by Cyrano throughout the novel. After all of society's misjudgments, Cyrano is the character he is. As the play begins, all aspects of society come together in theater that involves the poor and the rich. It was there that Roxane first saw Christian and she was immediately attracted to his appearance, she is just as society is quick to judge appearance over personality, completely underestimated by Cyrano. Roxane speaks to Cyrano about Christian beauty in act two, scene five. Roxane said: "His face shines with spirit and intelligence, he is proud, noble, young, fearless and beautiful." This shows that she is completely blinded by her appearance! Society will portray Christian as Roxane but will have different aspects of him. She says Christian is a bright person who judges him by his appearance. Roxane sets out to look for Christian, letting Cyrano know that he is part of her regiment. In act two, scene five, Roxane says: “And it turns out, cousin, that he is a member of your regiment. » Roxane had just seen Christian once and she already knew who he was and what he did....... middle of paper ......t my face is about to meet above your face…its nobility without glory, poetry, originality, liveliness, grandeur, no more noses in short”] This shows how proud Cyrano was of his nose, of who he was and of his appearance. Society tends to misjudge people based on their appearance rather than their personality. As the story of Cyrano de Bergerac shows, everyone misunderstands people. Cyrano was ashamed of his appearance, especially his enormous nose which distinguished him. People didn't care if Cyrano was hurt, they thought he was a cruel person. It's bad when people tend to misjudge people without even knowing them, but they just judge them on their appearance rather than their personality. People shouldn't be ashamed of their appearance and it shouldn't stop them from achieving their goals and expressing their feelings towards the people they love..
