In everyday life, people are often faced with ironic situations that they did not expect. Authors usually use irony in their works to grab the reader's attention. In the novel “Les Misérables”, Victor Hugo creates sarcasm in the character’s life. For example, Jean Valjean was in prison for 19 years; his only crime was stealing a loaf of bread to save his family. Police inspector Javert only sees light and darkness, that is, he only cares about what he sees. Javert was still after Jean Valjean even though Jean Valjean was out of prison. Some of the important ironies that Hugo includes in his book are that Jondrette who is the Thénardier is a neighbor of Marius and that Marius is looking for them. Second, Javert is captured as a spy. Last irony, Javert lets Jean Valjean escape, the one he hated the most. One of the ways Hugo shows irony is that Thénardier lives under the false name of Jondrette and they are neighbors of Marius. And he is looking for them. Marius is so generous that he paid Jondrette's rent without knowing who they really are. He was looking for Thénardier to thank him for saving his father at the Battle of Waterloo and, by accident, he thanked them by paying their rent. But he didn't know what kind of people they were. Once he finds a hole in the wall, he can see everything that is happening inside Jondrette's apartment. And he saw that they're not as good as they seem. They damaged their apartment to get money from the philanthropist Jean Valjean. When Jondrette says: “My name is not Fabantou, my name is not Jondrette, my name is Thénardier. I am the innkeeper of Montfermeil! Do you understand me? Thénardier! Now do you know me? »(Hugo 220), Marius was shocked. Still after knowing who the Jondrettes are and what kind of people they are, Marius did not shoot...... middle of paper ......78). Jean Valjean discovers the relationship between Marius and Cosette and heads to the barricade to save Marius from the police. Jean Valjean saved Marius by giving him his national guard uniform. Enjolras orders Jean Valjean to take the spy and kill him. A chance for Jean Valjean to take revenge but instead of killing him, he lets Javert walk away. It was ironic because at the barricade, the prisoner is Javert and not Jean Valjean. There are many ironies in Les Miserables but some greater ironies are that Marius is looking for Thénardier and discovers that they are right under his nose. Second irony, Javert gives Jean Valjean a chance to escape. The last important irony is that Javert is captured as a prisoner at the barricade.
