  • Essay / The character Blanche Dubois in A Streetcar Named Desire

In “A Streetcar Named Desire”, the main character Blanche Dubois displays behavior close to that of paranoia. The question that needs to be answered is why. Blanche is a character who has turned to many factors to ease her mental pain. Blanch uses denial as a coping mechanism that eventually makes her fear abandonment and the pressure of past conflicts. Denial is one of the ways that has helped Blanche deal with her stress, putting her in a state of mind that perhaps allows her to escape from her life. problems or reality itself. She also experienced the behavior of her alcohol addiction. In a setting in which someone had to psychoanalyze Blanche's condition, the reader or viewer must first understand the whole situation. In reference to the theory of Sigmund Freud, “psychoanalysis is the technique of helping a person with emotional problems based on the unconscious” (Lahey 9). Therefore, analyzing Sigmund Freud's theory to Blanche, it seems that she has an innate motive that influences her to have these illusions and false notions. Blanche suffers from past experiences starting with the loss of her husband, the loss of Belle Reve. , and the loss of his job as a literature teacher at Laurel, which led to the downfall of his life. Throughout the play, she tries to avoid guilt by engaging in sexual activities with strangers, constantly trying to avoid the truth, seeking validation needs on how she is perceived on her external appearance, and even creating one's own personal reality in which everything is perfect. "This manifests itself in several ways in Streetcar, primarily in Blanche's refusal to face certain actions from her past and the present reality of her own sexual urges which she covers up with such words... middle of paper.. ....ng, “Whoever you are, I have always depended on the kindness of strangers” (Williams 102). As a result, we see that Blanche's goal is primarily to find stability from her past fears of abandonment and security from the effects of mental congestion that have taken a toll on her life. All the illusions, misconceptions and alcoholism were to help Blanche cope with her desire to escape the reality of her life. These different mechanisms were the ideal way for Blanche to cope with the stress and increasing tensions during her stay with her sister. These were his ways of coping with unpleasant situations, living in a fantasy world and surviving. “Blanche was not only detached from reality, but her romantic gaze, however sensitive it may be, has a fatal weakness: it exists only by ignoring certain portions of reality. » (Drama for students 10).
