Essay / Angels in America - 654
Angels in America is the story of two different, but at the same time similar, couples. The main difference between the couples is that one is gay (Louis Ironson and his lover Prior Walter) and the other traditional (Joe Pitt and his wife Harper). The story is quite simple, about ordinary people, but it makes people feel a mystical atmosphere, skillfully linked with realism. As a “fantasy,” Angels in America constitutes a major departure from dominant theatrical realism, with detours into the religious and supernatural—angels, ghosts, apparitions, and visions appear again and again. The play is a beautiful combination of real situations and mystical characters, which help the heroes understand the true values of life. After the death of Lois' grandmother, her partner tells her that he is suffering from a very serious illness: AIDS. . So, Prior is panicked and doesn't know what to do. Lois is not ready to support Prior due to the constant feeling of fear and the inability to hope for a better future. At the same time, in the other family, Joe Pitt obtains a position in Justice, with the help of his friend. The first mysterious thing in the play, in my opinion, is the meeting of the main heroes. It seems impossible that such different people would connect in some way, but Lois meets Joe at his job and tries to befriend him, suspecting him of being gay. The second mystical element of the play is the meeting of Harper and Prior: they meet in the dream, where Prior tells the woman that her husband is a closeted homosexual. Here the realism and the mystical side of life are shown as a whole. Soon, Joe's friend Roy discovers that he also suffers from AIDS, but he denies it, because...... middle of paper... ...during the Francisco earthquake, and Since then they have been alone. Angels need constant sexual activity and people are always trying to change something, so angels cannot live. What is significant about the information that the angel gives is that it is quite revolutionary, because it talks about sexuality, while religion generally does not pay attention to this aspect of life. In the end, Prior helps the angels, but they say they can't give him more life, only when God returns they can ask him to do so. After returning to Earth, Prior tells Louis that he loves him. In the epilogue, Prior is seen saying that AIDS has killed a lot of people, but he is still alive. So we can see that the angels really helped him and gave him more time to live on earth. So we can see that people should always pay attention to real feelings and be loyal to the people they love..
