Essay / Community Service During the Great Recession - 1163
What is community service to you? What do you think the recent recession has done to community service? As a veteran of military service, I'm sure you all have performed many types of community service. Recent problems in our country's economy have led to changes in the amount of community services performed on a daily basis, but these changes are not necessarily what you think. Although most community service does not require money, some Americans worry more than others about their own families. My goal with this article is to explain, through research, how quickly community service can change in times of economic problems. Recently, studies have been done on community service and the changes the recession has had on them. An article written by Caroline Preston in August of this year states: "The report released last month by the Corporation for National and Community Service found that 26.4 percent of Americans, or 61.8 million people, volunteered through a nonprofit group last year. This figure was around a million more than in 2007 (6).” During this study, Americans performed more community service than the previous year. Even though the recession caused some Americans to lose their jobs, many still found time to give back to their communities in any way possible. There are many types of community service that anyone can do when they have time. From working in soup kitchens to helping paint houses for Habitat for Humanity. Community service is basically people having the time to help those who are unhappy and need help. With the recent recession, people have chosen to continue doing community service to help those in the middle of paper......they are doing service more than ever. The Government is asking us as a country to help more during this difficult time. The only question I have for you is: what can you do to help and what are you willing to do to give back to your community? Only time will tell if this country is moving in the right direction, but I think with the determination that the people of this country have shown to move forward and the amount that they are giving to this country, this country will be able to get through this difficult time and begin to thrive once again.
