Essay / Boys Like to Get Dirty - 1907
Why do boys like to get dirty? It's a mystery to so many people! Neighborhood sisters, mothers, and daughters mock the immaturity and Neanderthal nature of the activity the boys participate in by immersing themselves in filth. Growing up, there is a sort of fascination with grime, dust, sweat and especially mud. Almost every boy grew up with a sandbox where he could get at least a little dirty. In our youth, we boys spent hours digging holes in the garden, building forts in the woods, riding dirt bikes, building dams in the rain, just to get home with the frowns on our mother's faces at the state of our clothes and bodies. But of course, we loved every minute of it and dreaded the moment when we had to take a bath because it stopped us from continuing our activities, leading to the point of needing cleaning. We didn't see the point in washing off what would come back on our skin in the next twenty-four hours. Almost every form of our favorite fun involved dirt, mud, or rain, and that was half the fun! One of my few memories of my early childhood is from when my family was building the house we live in today. Before the house was finished, big hills and mud patches provided me with full-time entertainment. I remember how fascinated I would walk around the mudflat, which is now our front yard, and pick up big balls of dripping dirt and literally paint myself with wet red clay. My friend from Florida joined me to party, and that's how we enjoy each other's company. We also turned a five-foot pile of sand into an amusement park one afternoon that same year. As the dust crept into every nook and cranny of our clothes and bodies, we slipped...... middle of paper... finally, you will encounter, or most likely be able to spot, a particular type. who clearly didn't care how he looked or smelled. It's obvious, judging by his smell, his messy hair and clothes, and the occasional dried mud stains from two days ago, that this guy would rather break the rules of hygiene than submit to the appearance that women would like for him. For this man, it's all about power and control that he won't give up. It is in the hearts of these boys trapped in men's bodies that the love of earth and mud is carried and passed on to the boys of subsequent generations. Without these men, who never seem to grow up and never seem to really understand everything, the boys might stop building treehouses and going camping. They would forget what joy it is to play and slide in the mud, without worrying about the dirt and nastiness. We would forget a lot of what being a boy is.
