Essay / The Benefits of Attending an Inner City School
The Benefits of Attending an Inner City SchoolImagine having a gun staring you right in the eye. What are you doing? How do you react? Fortunately, most people don't have to deal with such a situation in their lives. However, this happened to me once while I was walking to my high school which is located in the middle of a big city. Another young man walking past me decided to show off in front of his friends and show them how "manly" he was. Without saying a word, he approached me and started hitting me. Once I started fighting back, he pulled out a gun and pointed it directly at me. After seeing this, I ran as fast as I could towards my school, hearing the group of boys laughing hysterically behind me. Although this event was by no means typical of St. Ignatius High School, going to school proved dangerous at times. While most people believe that inner-city schools can only hinder the learning process, I would argue that these schools provide experiences that enrich education simply because of their location in the city. To clarify this point, I must first describe the ways in which St. Ignace High School is different from the typical inner-city school. Most people define inner-city schools as institutions that are located in cities and have a comparatively inferior educational system. This private, Catholic institution is made up of predominantly white students from wealthy families. Although Saint Ignace is in the city, it also offers its students one of the best educations in the state. In fact, the surrounding town contrasts with the school in almost every way. Thefts and fights occur almost daily in this poor part of the city. Mexicans make up the majority of residents in the surrounding neighborhood. As soon as I left the school campus, I realized that I had entered an entirely new world. Society generally tends to focus on the negative side of inner-city schools. Many people like to stereotype these schools which, while these generalizations may be true in some cases, tend to be exaggerated most of the time. People think that students in these schools receive a substandard education. My school is considered one of the best in the state. People also believe that violence occurs daily, both at the school itself and in the surrounding town..
