Essay / Vegetarianism - 1257
VEGETARISMProteins, vitamins, minerals and fats which are the essential components of human life are present effectively in fruits, vegetables, grains and legumes. Lynda Dickson stated that “the human species did not evolve as carnivores or meat eaters” (37). We see that carnivores are anatomically different from herbivores. Meat eaters have well-developed canines, digestive juice with a higher level of hydrochloric acid, a long and wider digestive tract with well-developed legs for hunting prey, while herbivores are physically different from these characteristics . These anatomical differences between herbivores and carnivores suggest that humans were created not to eat meat. Vegetarian foods, which are environmentally friendly, are effective enough in providing the necessary nutrients to the human body and choosing the habit of vegetarianism is hygienically, economically and morally beneficial. Vegetarian foods are environmentally friendly. The vegetarian lifestyle is more environmentally friendly than a non-vegetarian lifestyle. The vegetarian eating habit contributes to the conservation of the environment (land, water and air); while the environmental impact generated by the production of non-vegetarian foods is quite serious. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, waste from animal agriculture contaminates rivers and lakes more than all other industries combined. Insecticides and pesticides used on livestock farms to get rid of harmful insects and bacteria eventually reach soil and water, causing chemical pollution. Moreover, these chemicals deposited on the bodies of animals pose a great threat to human health. Large quantities of animal feces and residues produced by cattle farms and slaughterhouses are the main causes of land and water pollution. Manure and...... middle of paper ......h blood pressure and obesity can be minimized by consuming plant-based foods. From an economic point of view, vegetarian diets are much more effective than meat-based diets and teach the individual to respect animals.BibliographyBall, Matt, A Meaningful life, 2008Dickinson, Lynda, WHY VEGETARIAN? 1994 Yourofsky, Gary. “Vegan Speaking Tour.” ADAPTT, http://www.adaptt.org/, 2010, accessed November 29, 2010.
