    Have you ever wondered what progeria is? Progeria is an extremely rare genetic disease that causes children to age rapidly. Progeria causes premature aging during childhood. Progeria affects 1 in 8 million children. Around two hundred children are living with progeria today. Progeria stands for Hutchinson–Gilford Progeria Disease. People also call HGPS progeria and childhood progeria. People shorten Hutchinson–Gilford Progeria to simply progeria. Dr. Jonathan Hutchinson described progeria in 1886 and Dr. Hastings Gilford described progeria in 1904 (Adams 1). Progeria has symptoms. Between nine and twenty-four months, symptoms begin to appear. Many children die in adolescence from these symptoms. Some symptoms of progeria are wrinkled skin, heart problems and strokes. Children underwent surgical procedures such as coronary artery bypass grafting and angioplasty to relieve life-threatening cardiovascular problems caused by progressive atherosclerosis (Lufaire 4).
