  • Essay / Sexism and stereotypes - 567

You are in an interview, the interviewer says you are not qualified for the position because of your gender. What would you say? Sexism has led to stereotyping and harassment in the workplace and professional sports. So people should know more about sexism. The media is a powerful communication tool, it produces both negative and positive impacts on society. Sexism is a major factor in the job market. Today, men and women find it difficult to break into fields dominated by the opposite sexes. This happened because of the media, which showed us that men have certain “good” jobs, just like women. Women still dominate traditional female professions like cosmetology jobs: 92.9 percent of women work there (Wolfe). If a man goes into cosmetology, he will most likely be judged for that job because we stereotype that he can't have a woman's job. Women find it more difficult to access high-level positions. “Women make up only 21 of the S&P 500 CEOs” (Berman). This is because the media has established stereotypes that it is unacceptable for women to hold high-level positions. The situation is improving: in 2012, the number of female CFOs increased by 35% in large American companies compared to 2012 (Frier and Hymowitz). The job market between men and women is still unfair, but it is starting to become equal. Another significant gender factor in the workforce is that women are paid less than men for the same work. “Women are paid 77 cents on the dollar for every dollar a man earns, according to a recent study by the Institute for Women's Policy Research. This represents a difference of more than $10,000 per year on average” (Berman). Why is this? Some people think it's because women gravitate downward...... middle of paper ......idance, November 2010. Web.
