This is a common argument that has been made by others who believe the invasion of Iraq was illegal. However, it was the failure of US diplomatic policy that led to the failure of the invasion of Iraq. George W. Bush launched an invasion of Iraq and only Congress approved his “2002 Resolution Authorizing the Use of Military Force Against Iraq.” However, he did not have the necessary authorization from the United Nations and the invasion of Iraq was therefore illegal. It is true that Saddam Hussein was killing his own people, but the United States should not have invaded the country without solid evidence. George W. Bush claimed that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction, but none were ever found. (The invasion of Iraq is illegal) In 1963, the United States CIA placed Hussein's Baath Party in power. We were complicit in the birth of this regime through an unconstitutional act of foreign aggression. Then, in the late 1970s, President Carter encouraged Hussein to invade Iran, hoping to overthrow the Islamic regime there. Hundreds of thousands of deaths occurred because of this invasion and we did absolutely nothing to protest these brutal human rights violations because we were behind them. In 1991, Iraq concluded a ceasefire agreement in which it committed to eliminating its nuclear, biological and chemical weapons programs.
