Essay / Romeo and Juliet Analysis of Light and Darkness - 717
Light is always followed by darkness, but for two star-crossed lovers, the darkness comes too soon. William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is a tragic play that explores many dimensions of adolescent love. Romeo and Juliet's love is cursed, but these two try to defy the odds. Throughout the play, Shakespeare alludes to their tragic outcome. Additionally, we constantly see Juliet comparing right to wrong when faced with grief. Finally, the lack of understanding of adolescents' decision-making is highlighted through their actions. Shakespeare uses light and darkness as a motif to convey the theme that people cannot escape the inevitability of their fate. While Romeo sleeps, he receives a visit from a special guest. This visitor is Queen Mab and she leaves an untimely death message for Romeo in his dreams. Shakespeare elaborately describes Queen Mab as a little fairy who visits people in their sleep and leaves them a message seen through a dream. Romeo dreams that he will meet an untimely death if he goes to the Capulet party. Romeo is easily persuaded by Benvolio and Mercutio to go to the party partly because he is in an exaggerated depression since he cannot be with Rosaline. Although he is probably already contemplating death, we can see that he is still confused by his dream. “I fear too soon, for my mind worries/Some consequences still hang in the stars/Must bitterly begin its terrible rendezvous/With this night's revelry, and expire the term/Of a despised life locked up in my bosom/By some ignoble crime of premature death./But he who directs my course,/Directs my sail. Come on, strong gentlemen. »(Act i.iv.107-114). Romeo talks about the night bringing something bad, this thought is an example of how Shakespeare associates ...... middle of paper ......this with adolescent decision making. Tragically, Romeo is able to carry out his plan and commit suicide without knowing that Juliet is still alive and just under a potion. Juliet wakes up to find that Romeo is dead and decides for herself that she should also join Romeo in the darkness. Throughout the tragedy, Shakespeare foreshadows the conclusion several times by adding clues as to what will happen next. Furthermore, in moments of despair, Juliette will constantly resort to comparing good and evil. Finally, adolescent decision-making is truly perceived as ignorant. On the other hand, the tragic fate of Romeo and Juliet was able to put an end to a quarrel that has been tearing two families apart for several generations. The theme that people cannot escape their own destiny is illustrated by the light and dark pattern. Although Romeo and Juliet entered the darkness together, they will now spend eternity in the light..
