Today's technology advances at lightning speed, but some inventions remain unchanged and inspiring. Even though there are many inventions that benefit our life, only some inventions might still be alive because of the benefits they bring to people. In “Don't change anything” by Thérèse Oneill, Oneill presents to us the six eternal inventions that still exist today. Additionally, Jessica Guynn's article, "Douglas Engelbart Dies at 88," explains how Engelbart's passion and inspiration brought to the field of computing creates today's revolutionary computer. Despite the fact that there are many inventions, many people abandon them or end up modifying them completely. However, some inventions manage to survive and become timeless because of their usefulness and the passion and inspiration of the inventor that developed into the invention. First, utility is truly one of the most important criteria that determine the value and lifespan of an invention. Without any benefit that can help people, an invention will quickly be forgotten because the purpose of an invention is to bring change and positive effects to our world and our human community. Therefore, utility plays a major role in the success of an invention. For example, the rocking chair is an effective invention that brings benefit to people. With a thoughtful idea, it provides a function that “automatically adjusts its center of balance to whoever sits there, providing each person with a particularly comfortable position” (p. 4). Through this useful benefit, it improves the lives of some people because it provides relief to “those suffering from illnesses” (p. 4).
