Essay / Hills Like White Elephants by Ernest Hemingway
Hills Like White ElephantsHemingway was known for writing very little with a lot of underlying meaning. Most of his work relies more or less on dialogue. In "Hills Like White Elephants", we have a brief introduction of the setting and then a dialogue between Jig and the American. This short story doesn't give you any clue as to what the main characters are actually saying, but the tone, setting, and symbolism play a large role in explaining the current situation and what Hemingway was trying to convey in this short play . The scene takes place in Barcelona, Spain, at a train station overlooking the hills of the valley. The main characters wait in a bar until their train arrives to take them to Madrid, Spain. Jig starts by asking her if she can have a drink and the two start drinking and talking about an operation Jig is supposed to have. The conversation becomes slightly intense, which is evident in the body language and tone emitted. The American woman tries to calm his nerves by telling him: “It really is a terribly simple operation, Jig,” the man says. “It’s not really an operation at all. » (Hemingway) Although it seems that the American is trying to support him, the situation changes when Jig responds. After reading the story carefully, you discover that the operation is actually an abortion. On first reading, you think the American girl is supportive and trying to calm Jig's nerves, but that changes later when you read Jig's reactions to what is said to him. An argument breaks out and causes Jig to walk away, look at the scenery and dwell on the beauty. This later transition towards the end of the play where the American takes the luggage to the end of the tracks because their train would arrive short...... middle of paper ...... would have the baby and he 'I'll stay for a while but I think his departure is inevitable. The American has already made it clear that his happiness would be better determined after the operation, so clearly he wouldn't be truly happy if she delivered the baby. In life we have to compromise, but that doesn't mean we have to. compromising our thoughts, beliefs, or aspirations to please others. I think that's what Hemingway was trying to overcome. He wrote a very subtle but meaningful play that addresses what people really experience in life. When you sit here and dissect the story, your imagination takes over and really causes you to take your personal experiences and tie them into the story. Your personal experiences can ultimately leave you with a story that you can understand in depth and understand the emotions that emanate from the characters..
