Essay / Discussing Government Control - 690
Government control is a topic that our class has discussed frequently. We discussed how a dystopian government tries to be a constant and active presence in the lives of citizens. This is exactly how it happens in 4 The People. The class system is also present in 4 The People. Anyone who does not work in the Deathrow government and lives in Southside is a "commoner". Party members look down on the common people and consider them a waste of life. Three executive leaders lead the government of Deathrow. Each manager is assigned specific responsibilities. Jon's father is in charge of Deathrow's justice system. Robb's father is in charge of the death row economy. Jaime's father was in charge of the Deathrows police Jon, Robb and Jaime's father formed a triumvirate that rules all of Deathrow. All rules and regulations are voted on by members of Deathrow's Party. Each year, three ideas that Executive leaders consider “favorable” are adopted. New executive leaders are chosen every ten years. Members of Deathrow's Party vote within their party and the three people who receive the highest number of votes will be the three new executive leaders. These three biggest vote-getters have no choice but to accept the job. If an executive officer dies during the term, a vote will then be taken for a temporary replacement until the next election. The primary function of the death row government is to intentionally suppress commoners. This is to prevent citizens from rebelling against Party members. The government repressed commoners in two main ways: intentional repression of the food supply and the annual death row drawing. The government has intentionally... middle of paper ... logically and mentally destroyed the hope and will to live of the commoners. It's about dystopian fiction in which commoners live in a place that makes their worst dreams come true. Having to kill your neighbors to feed yourself and having to watch your loved one get killed in front of you is hell. It is a never-ending nightmare for everyone who lives in this environment. Citizens are afraid of the government because of the lottery and police brutality. These commoners must live in a dehumanized state as they are always in a constant survival mode to feed themselves while worrying about the death of their loved ones. The idea of “hope” is non-existent on death row because there is no way to defy the government. Dystopia literature allows ideas such as hope to be abolished due to the harsh conditions that dictate this illusion of a perfect world..
