  • Essay / Product Information Management Case Study - 1082

Essentially, PIM is about capturing and maintaining product information. At NHP this is implemented through a system called Perfion which manages the database of all their electrical product information. This information includes a range of different aspects such as electrical specifications, product descriptions, product images, schematics and much more. Obviously, data entry is an important aspect of this process and this is how Elizabeth got into this field. Over time, she developed her skills and eventually took the position of product information manager. Since NHP has over 25,000 different product lines, this data entry process can often be quite tedious and repetitive, but it is necessary to develop and maintain the system. Automating data entry into the system would be ideal, but in reality it would take more time than it's worth to write a program that could do this. Data entry itself is focused on efficiency and structure. Elizabeth put a lot of effort into ensuring a rigid structure to the Perfion system that allows information to be defined at different levels, such as product categories, product lines, etc. This allows data to be entered both more efficiently and more usefully, as it eliminates the need to manually enter information for each product individually. But despite the tedious aspect of data entry, Elizabeth still finds the position very rewarding. She finds the work technically interesting, which is a key requirement for her, coming from an engineering background. Another advantage is that it is stable and not a “soul-sucking” type of job [IS QUOTE APPROPRIATE?? IS IT??], which is important to Elizabeth because she tends to devote herself entirely to her work. These aspects of the job can also be attributed to NHP and its well-structured corporate environment. Elizabeth declared that the only two
