  • Essay / Personal Reflection: The success of a...

The success of an interdisciplinary team or any team depends on all the parts contributing to a greater whole (Gestalt - "something that is made up of many parts and yet is somehow more or different from the combination of its parts; in the broad sense: the general quality or character of something). If a game remains unfinished, any team's success will be compromised. The customer is an essential member of the team. This allows the customer to be more proactive in the process. By working as an interdisciplinary team, we were able to meet the needs of a client as a whole, completing a biopsychosocial needs assessment and using a strengths-based approach. Our team worked on both a quantitative and qualitative research approach. We worked together effectively and successfully completed the competition. Joining the pageant was one of my greatest experiences so far. My experiences with the H-GEC competition have been enlightening. These experiences allowed me to see that effective teamwork can accomplish much more than a single individual. As a group, we all studied the interviewee's story and worked with them. We questioned and explored alternative outcomes by stepping outside our own discipline and considering different alternatives. The competition allowed me to broaden my horizons in terms of teamwork, research and time management within a group of 10 participants. I was able to address different ideas and points of view from each participant. I learned to delegate better in a way that takes into account everyone's thoughts and ideas. The competition offered me a motivating work environment. I was able to discover other disciplines and how they relate to my own discipline. As a social work...... middle of paper ....... As a country I don't think we are ready to work with older people. I can also see that in my GCSW cohort, social workers interested in geriatrics are minimal. My biggest concern about working in gerontology is that I will be working with the fastest growing population that is currently under-resourced. As geriatric social workers, we will have fewer staff and more clients. There may potentially be a risk of high burnout, which will lead to significant staff turnover, which will ultimately impact not only the level of care the population receives, but could also have a negative impact on the population that is already facing age-related difficulties. The H-GEC competition reminded me of the importance of research in gerontology and how much I want to continue my studies in this field. I am extremely grateful to have been part of such an incredible opportunity.
