  • Essay / Persuasive Essay on Gene Therapy - 869

Gene therapy is considered a relatively new form of treatment that could potentially benefit people with any of the thousands of conditions caused by genetic disease. The use of gene therapy can treat, prevent or cure these types of diseases1. This “drug of the future” has been in development for decades, but there is not much success for human patients because gene therapy is not yet entirely practical. Human clinical trials are still in the research phase because gene therapy can be unpredictable. Very few patients received gene therapy. Researchers are working extremely hard to overcome the challenges they face and ensure that gene therapy is safe and effective for humans. Gene therapy works in various ways. It can be used to solve the problem of missing genes by adding a gene to fight a disease3. The main goal of gene therapy is to help correct mutations in the body by replacing poorly functioning genes with properly functioning genes. Some mutations are harmless, but others can cause a patient to develop disease. The DNA in genes is responsible for carrying the information that makes up proteins. Proteins can be considered “the building blocks of our body”1. So if a gene mutates and becomes harmful, it can cause many problems. The use of gene therapy can not only prevent a protein from causing damage by restoring its normal function; it can also confer new functions to a protein for the benefit of a patient2. By following this process, we can treat illnesses at the source instead of using medications to mask symptoms4. There are several methods used to pass correct genetic material to defective genes. One method is to use a vector. Ith... middle of document... the positive sides of this are that in some cases patients only need to complete the process once, so there will be no need for multiple payments. On the negative side, many patients have to undergo multiple treatments, which involves multiple payments. Many people disagree, but many people agree with gene therapy. In fact, a survey conducted more than three years ago showed that more than half of Americans thought genetic engineering was acceptable. Opinions vary across the world as in Japan the survey found that more than seventy percent thought genetic engineering was unacceptable4. Even though many people disagree with gene therapy, they forget that for some people it is a matter of life and death. As long as people keep this in mind and don't get greedy, we should be able to proceed with gene therapy calmly without any problems..
