Part II The title For Whom the Bell Tolls symbolizes the uncertainty of life and destiny, where the main character of this story finds himself in a series of unpredictable situations that escape its control. The only certain event in life is death and knowing that this can happen to anyone at any time, makes the protagonist helpless in the face of fate, which he approaches with a fatalistic disposition. The third part For Whom the Bell Tolls takes place in Spain, during the bloody civil war, between the years 1938 and 1942. It takes place among the inhabitants of rural and mountainous areas of Spain. They were forced to kill others to survive and defend their country against the fascists. The environment in which the actions take place are the rugged mountains. Many murders take place in this story. It was certainly a time of fear and despair. Many heroic military acts are depicted here: Robert Jordan and his group of internationalists sabotaged bridges, trains and buildings. Many peasants were starved, tortured and killed, and many children were orphaned. Part IV 1 "He lay flat on the brown, pine-needle-covered ground of the forest, his chin on his crossed arms, and high above his head, the wind blew across the tops of the pines" (p.1) 2 "He crossed the stream, plucked a double handful, washed the muddy roots in the stream, then sat down again beside his bag and ate the clean, fresh green leaves and the crisp stems with a peppery taste” (p. 12) 3 “Robert Jordan breathed deeply of the clear mountain night air that smelled of pine trees and dewy grass in the meadow by the stream The dew had since fallen heavily. that the wind had died down.
