  • Essay / Becoming a Christian Teacher - 1649

IntroductionMy first teaching experience was in a Christian school. Looking back, I recognize that I taught in the same secular manner that I had been taught when I was a student in a public school. What dictates the direction of the classroom is the extent to which the teacher reflects on his or her teaching and seeks to teach from a Christian worldview. Van Brummelen (2009) notes that “Christian teachers, both in public and Christian schools, often accept common approaches to the curriculum without revisiting their worldview roots. As a result, their teaching does not fully reflect biblical views of knowledge, people, and values." (p. 67). I currently teach at a Christian school and see my goal of preparing my students for Advanced Placement exams. has become a priority that replaces Christ in the classroom I also recognize that I operate within a traditionalist teaching framework that does not modify teaching to fit each student's God-given uniqueness (. 2009) reminded me that “traditionalists often fail to get students to develop and interpret their knowledge in ways that reflect the diversity of the unique students in their classrooms” (p. 71). the unique God-created personality of each of my students If I view each student as unique and wonderfully created in the image of God, I will have a Christ-like influence on my secular and Christian students. Van Brummelen (2009) describes how: “Biblical love must also characterize the classroom itself. Teachers are attentive to the needs of their students. They are charitable people who entrust students with meaningful responsibilities in a setting where they cultivate respect and support. (p. 76).
