On January 31, 1797, Franz Schubert was born in Himmelpfortgrund, Austria. He was the fourth surviving son of Franz Theodor and Elisabeth Schubert. His musical gift was evident from his youth. His family's love of music influenced Schubert from an early age. As a child, he already had the ability to play the “piano, organ and violin”. (Thompson) He also had excellent singing talent. And thanks to his father's job as a teacher, he was able to receive a complete musical education. In 1808, Schubert enrolled at the Stadtkonvikt, a school that trained young singers for church and court, with a scholarship that gave him a place in the choir of the court chapel. At school he was trained by Wenzel Ruzicka, an imperial court organist, and Antonio Salieri, a highly regarded composer who revered Schubert's musical talents. Salieri adored Schubert and his musical talents; he is known to have declared: “He already knows everything,” he said; he was taught by God.
