Grocery store workers face many challenges, such as standing throughout their shift, lifting heavy objects, processing appropriately sometimes irritable customers and dealing with monotonous tasks. The biggest challenge is low wages, often minimum wage, which make life at home difficult and difficult for the average cashier, baker and stockman. Since working conditions for grocery store workers can be grueling and low-paying, turnover rates are astronomically high. Because of the low wages available, grocery chains must incentivize their employees with benefits they couldn't find elsewhere. One of the major grocery store chains trying to combat this problem is Publix Super Markets. Publix Super Markets' main goal is to become the "world's premium food retailer" and they have achieved this goal by focusing on giving. the greatest service rendered to its customers and by building a lasting relationship with its employees. They have been included in the FORTUNE “100 Best Companies to Work For” ranking every year since 1998, which is not an easy achievement. Slowly, they expanded their consumer base and currently own and operate over a thousand stores, including their own distribution centers. The key to success has been never knowingly disappointing customers, while giving back to the community and keeping employees happy (Publix Asset Management Company, 2014).
