Essay / Harvard anthropologist Dr. James Herron defines racism as follows: “Racial ideologies are fundamentally judgments about who is worthy, who is decent, who belongs, and who does not. Inclusion and exclusion. (Fieseler, Baran, and Herron 2017) Most people do not want to be defined as racist because the majority of people agree that it is a negative label. What if I told you that you, your parents, and our government are unconsciously racist. A bit absurd but not far from the privilege of being born white and already being 100 steps ahead of those who aren't by doing nothing. This essay will examine how class, society, education, policies, and our political system contain bias. Say no to plagiarism. By providing strong evidence to support his argument, he is able to convey to his audience the clear separation between the poor and the rich classes. In this argument, he mentions that Americans generally don't mention how they recognize class among themselves. It is rather a taboo subject to discuss. In today's society, it is much easier for people belonging to lower classes to obtain designer clothing due to the mass production of clothing at a lower cost. (Mantsios 382) Due to this event, among other factors, it contributes to the appearance of a middle class in America and makes it more difficult to discern whether someone is lower class. When we are unable to determine a person's status based on their appearance, it leads us to judge other aspects, including race, ethnicity, location, and gender. Mantsios presents several profiles of people which include: their parents' profession, education, activities, care, past and current jobs and income. By analyzing these 3 profiles, he comes to the conclusion that what you were born into is generally where you will stay for the rest of your life. For example, being born into the richest 1%, or 323,000 Americans, earning over a million dollars in salary, you hold 36% of the country's wealth while the richest 20% hold 90%. . (Mantsios 380) That being said, this will result in the opening of abundant opportunities. Compared to being born into one of the 42 million people who are lower class or living in poverty and will not have access to these types of opportunities in their lifetime. All of these factors, most of which are uncontrollable, can negatively impact lifestyle, materials, physical and mental health, health care, mortality rate and/or housing. As a result, what you are born into will determine the opportunities and abilities you will have in this life. You can be born into a privileged environment or struggle throughout your life to provide for the bare necessities. It has been nearly 60 years since the United States Supreme Court ruled that school segregation was unconstitutional. Since these were public high schools, the children are divided based on the geographic location of their home to decide which school they go to. This is how, with school zones, the constituencies where representatives to Congress will be elected are decided. Some states practice gerrymandering, which is when one state manipulates borders or "district boundaries" to favor one group over others. For example, let's say there is.
