Essay / The tragedy of Antigone - 1213
It is obvious to see what, in the character of Antigone, makes it a tragedy. Tragedy is defined as a dramatic composition dealing with a serious or dark theme, and this story meets all of these criteria. First, it involves a tragic unfolding of events that resulted in the deaths of his two brothers, and then a complete lack of respect, even in death. She felt she had to correct this mistake, even though it was against the law and the opposition was too great. Because of her attempt to right the injustice, even more tragic things happened to her and her family. This is why she is a tragic heroine. First, there was a series of tragic events that led her to get involved in it by disrespecting her own brother. She had two brothers, Eteocles and Polynices. When Oedipus died, it was agreed that they would alternately rule his throne each year. However, after the first year, Eteocles refused to step down from the throne. This led to a duel between the brothers, which resulted in both brothers killing each other. For this reason, Antigone's uncle, Creon, ascended the throne and ordered that Eteocles be buried but that Polynices remain on the surface. He also ordered that any attempt at burial would result in the culprit being put to death. It was this injustice that started the whole tragedy, although the events leading up to it were also slightly tragic. Despite the death penalty that threatened to be applied to anyone who attempted to bury Antigone's brother, Antigone considered this such an injustice that she felt she must remedy it at all costs. A series of tragic events unfolded because of this feeling which helps define this story as a tragedy and Antigone as a tragic heroine. When the story begins, Antigone speaks... middle of paper ... not only because of the number of deaths of loved ones in this story, but also because of the manner in which they happened, is it considered a tragedy and Antigone a tragic heroine. Antigone had to endure the loss of both her brothers and, although it can happen in everyday life, one of her brothers was considered to have abandoned his original state and was not allowed to be buried properly. While she attempted to right this injustice, as she felt it necessary to do out of honor, she was sentenced to death, and because of this, her family and fiancé also committed suicide to her. It is a story not only of tragedy, but also of extreme passion and honor, not found in today's world. We can all learn something from this story, because none of us could even hope to display the devotion that Antigone did to her brother, even in death..
