Essay / Summary and Analysis of My Learning Objective - 1471
Although most of the things I learned correspond to my life experience, the most important one is explained in the Stereotypes, Prejudice and Discrimination chapter of our textbook . The chapter explains how prejudices will change more quickly if confronted with people who see them happening (Schmitz 2012). In my own experience, when I came to the United States from Ethiopia in 2011, I was treated unfairly in most places simply because of my background. Instead of confronting the people who treated me this way, I continued to ignore the fact that I was being discriminated against. However, as I began to learn more about injustice and discrimination, I began to challenge and speak out against any biased treatment of me or any other person. The result was very remarkable. Not only was I able to stop people from committing immoral acts, but I was also able to learn why they engage in such acts. Matching what I learned with my experience helped me better understand the material I am learning and helped me apply it in my daily life.
