  • Essay / Fan Ethnography: Typical Nashville Fans...

In order to determine the current success of Nashville Sounds, I surveyed fans of the game. I used the "snowball effect" to get responses from fans I knew, then I asked them to refer me to fans they knew for their responses to my questionnaire. I also submitted my questionnaire to a local blogger who discusses Nashville Sounds baseball. By collecting 38 responses, I feel like I've gained insight into the typical fan as well as the differences in the game's appeal to different types of fans. The typical Sounds fan is male and between the ages of 22 and 40. most often a family and takes them to games with him. He played baseball at some level, mostly, at least in high school. He first attended a game as a child or young adult depending on whether or not he grew up in Nashville. He attends between 5 and 10 matches per season and does not hold a season ticket. He usually enjoys a meal at the ballpark and has purchased souvenirs for himself or his family. He usually doesn't have a favorite player and doesn't see the Sounds play on the road. It also doesn't track players in their winter leagues for the most part. He has attended at least one major championship game in his life and sometimes attends other sporting events in Nashville (Titans or Predators). He prefers minor league ball to major league ball because it is more affordable, there are more activities at the ball park and it is convenient. He considers himself a fan for two reasons: it's affordable family entertainment and he loves baseball. The majority of respondents to the questionnaire were men (84%). Mills writes in his book Chasing Baseball that sporting success has long been considered a sign of mas...... middle of paper ...... always feature a guitar-shaped scoreboard that 100 percent of people interviewed appreciated. Several fans said the scoreboard, which is shaped like a huge guitar, is iconic. It is unique to Nashville and enhances our musical heritage. Although they would like to see an updated version, they seemed nostalgic for wanting the game to be in the new stadium. Tickets are already on sale for the inaugural 2015 season. Many older Sounds fans are happy with the location of the new park. The historical significance of the area brings back fond memories of their childhood watching the old Nashville Vols play. There will most likely still be Fireworks and Ozzie Fridays, because that's a big deal in America. But there will also be baseball, where father and son will watch unknown heroes attempt to realize their American dream of playing baseball in the major leagues..
