What is most important for education? The content or the way the content is taught? Many policy makers today believe that the first is much more crucial for the development of our youth. With high-stakes testing and an entire industry of textbooks and tests, the current system places empirical results above all else. Unfortunately, this approach is only useful with lower levels of Depths of Knowledge (DOK) and Bloom's Taxonomy graphs. This only helps with basic recall of facts and knowledge. A second concern with this type of teaching is that it instills only one point of view in students. This is also problematic in the case of diverse classes made up of students from diverse backgrounds. Would an approach that reinforces critical thinking and higher levels of DOK be more appropriate? A technique that incorporates the diversity of the classroom and life experiences of these students can be explained by Christopher Emdin and Django Paris, two advocates of culturally sustainable pedagogy or reality pedagogy. The Django Paris article on culturally sustainable pedagogy is based on Gloria Ladson-Billings. work. Paris advocates that we should approach this pedagogy by “helping young people maintain the cultural and linguistic competence of their communities while simultaneously providing access to mainstream cultural competence.” (Paris 95) This approach aims to support and cultivate the culture of communities that have been affected by structured inequalities. Designing student-centered lessons can be effective in promoting this. Personalizing learning for students is based on the idea of ​​differentiated instruction to meet the needs of your students. Knowing the student's interests, hobbies, and culture will be essential in determining how to approach lessons. Following these suggested practices will make teaching the content easier. As a teacher, I will need to keep this in mind for all of my students. Fostering an environment that cultivates and promotes the pluralistic society in which we live will be beneficial. This can help combat deficit approaches to education that stifle or suppress minority culture and language while promoting acceptance of a multicultural and equitable society.
