    Workplace DiscriminationDiscrimination occurs when an employee suffers unfavorable or unfair treatment because of their race, religion, national origin, his or her status as a disabled or veteran, or other legally protected characteristics. Employees who have suffered retaliation for opposing workplace discrimination or reporting violations to authorities are also considered victims of discrimination. Federal law prohibits discrimination in job-related matters, such as recruiting, hiring, job evaluations, promotion policies, training, compensation, and disciplinary actions. Treating one person differently from others violates equal employment opportunity (EEO) laws only when the treatment is based on the presence of a protected characteristic, rather than job performance or even something different.
