  • Essay / Why leaders are made rather than born: - 1120

According to Warren G. Bennis, “The most dangerous myth in leadership is that leaders are born – that there is a genetic factor to leadership ... This is nonsense; In fact, the opposite is true. Leaders are made rather than born. » (Bennis). Others completely disagree with Bennis and believe that leaders are born. The popular opinion of many psychologists is that leadership is an inherited trait and that those who do not inherit this gift have no chance of developing it on their own. Contrary to popular belief that leaders are born, I believe that leaders are made. Leaders are created because leaders come from all walks of life, people can become leaders at any point in their lives, people become better leaders over time, and the question itself of whether leaders are born or created is harmful. At the London School of Economics, leaders are rarely born (Varghese). Instead, leaders are people who rise to the occasion and are willing to choose to lead under particular conditions. Bernard Bass theorized that under certain circumstances, anyone can be a leader (Varghese). At the same time, leadership characteristics are often thought to be inherited. The problem with this theory is evident when presented with research that shows only a slight connection between IQ tests and personality profiles that in no way distinguishes leaders from non-leaders (Varghese). So if intelligence and personality have no influence on whether or not a person is a leader, how can people think that leaders are born? Whether or not a person is a leader depends solely on the circumstances and the choices they make based on those circumstances.
