Essay / Segregation and Discrimination - 725
The Treatment of African AmericansThe treatment of African Americans has, in my opinion, almost always been worse than, for example, the treatment of Europeans. In the 17th century, white people went to Africa and brought Africans back to their country as slaves. In their country, they continued to treat them like slaves without any respect to do the hard work, i.e. picking cotton, harvesting tobacco, building railways, etc. You were essentially judged by the color of your skin and not your character. Even though slavery was established a long time ago, segregation and discrimination have not yet completely ended. A big event in the 19th century was Abraham Lincoln's speech declaring slaves free. But he did not want them to benefit from the same social and political rights. Things have improved for people of color in some parts of the world, but not to the same extent as for white people. This case was repeated after Luther Martin King gave his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. The situation improved for people of color, but there was still hatred against people of color, including in Sweden. This hatred was especially one of the reasons why the racist group Ku Klux Klan was created and spread. In a world where there is a lot of love and respect, there is also an opposite side, just like ying and yang. There is good, then there is the opposite, evil. Why did so many people join and still remain in a group as evil as the Ku Klux Klan? There are many different reasons; One of them is people who grow up in a society who are against equality and still see differences between the same species, Homo sapiens, because of their appearance. This really makes me angry, not only because it's a selfish, ...... middle of paper ...... opinion on how the majority of Swedish speakers perceive immigrants. Give your opinion, explain why you think the way you do, give arguments and examples to support your opinions. What might others think? Compare the situation in the 1960s with that of Sweden today. Is there segregation in Sweden? In Eskilstuna? Is there discrimination in Sweden? In Eskilstuna? If so, what similarities and differences do you see? Why are people segregated and/or discriminated against (gender, ethnicity, race, age, religion, etc.)? Describe, explain and give examples.
