Essay / Types of play as a means of learning - 1451
1. Solitary Game - A little boy was busy building a plane with Legos, he was completely absorbed in what he was making, he was concentrating on selecting the right color, size and shape of Legos. He was very careful to put the Lego plane together. Childrden would come over and ask him what he was doing or if they could help him, but he would just keep playing and say no thanks. Once he was done, he ran around the room, pretending to fly it while making all the noises. When cleaning time arrived, he carefully put his plane away and sat down. Parallel game - Two little girls feed their doll. They are both sitting next to their doll who is in a high chair, they are both talking to the doll asking almost identical questions like "are you hungry baby" and "do you want milk", the Little girls would then put a bib on the baby and start feeding him. Both girls only interacted with the baby, but they practically mirrored their actions towards the doll. Associative play - A group of children we all sit around the plasticine table, preparing a plasticine pizza. They talk to each other about the type of pizza they make, but each child worked on their own pizza. Cooperative game: two girls have drawn a huge dress on the black roof with chalk, they work together to color it and give it patterns. They said it was a princess dress. They spent all their time outside working together to make this beautiful princess dress. I see a lot of social things, they communicate with friends, practice sharing, develop friendships and get along with others. They work together to make dresses on the asphalt or talk about different types of pizza and their favorite. I also... middle of paper ...... a site that offered more free play and more choices to children, I think children should have options and make their own choices, so I I found it a bit unfair that children never really had the chance to make decisions for themselves. It was good, since I also worked in another preschool, to be able to compare the two preschools and how they work and what things I would and wouldn't change. I also think the way they ran their program made it harder for me to answer some of my main questions because the kids didn't have free will to do what they wanted, there was no no equipment or defined areas, and there weren't really any disciples either. I think the fact that they had 40 kids for 6 teachers was a bit too much, and I think the teachers themselves weren't very energetic or supportive, which almost made it seem like no one had lots of control over the class..
