Without a safe and stress-free environment, individuals tend to be demotivated and feel unsafe. Once individuals have sorted out their safety needs, the need to belong will eventually develop and this is when individuals seek the feeling of acceptance or affection from others. Individuals will begin to develop feelings of association with others through socializing and will want to feel a sense of belonging with them (Maslow, 1943). Organizations can ensure this need is met by implementing social events and community clubs that allow individuals to comfortably interact with one another. By doing this, individuals can feel satisfied in their work environment and productivity will eventually increase. Then they will begin to seek attention for their work and this is where the need for self-esteem manifests itself. At this stage, individuals are motivated when they are recognized for their contribution and efforts in their work. According to Ball (nd), self-esteem involves the need for recognition, adequacy and achievement and allows them to have confidence in their potential. Finally, self-actualization is the recognition of self on the part of individuals when they fully realize their potential.
