Essay / What is a State? - 2335
Max Weber, a forefather of modern science, created the modern definition of a state. Weber believed that a state was a “community which claims a monopoly on the legitimate use of physical force within a given territory.” The state creates a legitimate means of using force, or the right to use violence within the state or against another state. In very simple terms, it is the domination of men over men by lawful means. From this concept, Weber defined politics as the effort to share power or influence the distribution of power with a state or between groups within a state. This is a good point, especially considering that a politician has a great influence on how power is distributed within a government. For those in positions of power, such as political leaders, there must be a just cause by which the dominated submit to authority (Weber 1958). Weber explains that there are three different types of legitimized authority. The first authority described by Weber is that authority is rooted in ancient rituals and traditions to conform to the primary authority of the ancestors (Weber 1958). This is exemplified in the form of patriarchy and inherited authority. England is an exceptional example because, although many European countries have had monarchical authority throughout their history, England still recognizes the royal lineage and has a monarchy. While the monarchy's position in government has changed from commander and chief to head of state, England retains this authority by which it legitimizes its state. Weber calls the second form of authority the “gift of grace.” The concept of this authority is that legitimacy comes from a certainty in the middle of a paper explaining why nationalism will lead to a great clash of civilizations. Nationalism has done much over the past century to strengthen individual states as well as interstate relations. The countries of Europe all have very different and unique cultures and strong nationalism. However, since the Second World War, they have developed good interstate relations thanks to the development of the European Union and have the euro, a unified currency. Many states around the world have been able to conclude peaceful economic agreements and treaties. What makes the global community wonderful and effective is the different cultures and mindsets used in combination to find the most creative and effective method of international relations. Without nationalism, every state would end up looking and functioning the same and there would be no competitive pressure to become better or improve..
