Ms. Harmon described her day-to-day work as a counselor as unpredictable. She explained that each day she usually spends time answering emails and phone calls, as well as calling universities and community organizations. She said she focuses more on the academic part of counseling and, depending on the level of severity, she may refer a student to the school social worker for social-emotional counseling. She said 70 percent of her time is spent evaluating students' academic, personal, social and professional aspects, while the remaining 30 percent is used to focus on students' social and emotional issues. While talking with her, I noticed that many students came in and out of her office for various reasons; Some of the reasons included students looking for bus passes, scholarships, candy, clarification on course requirements and informing him of problems among students enrolled at King. I noticed students referring to Ms. Harmon as their mother at school. She had an open door policy and was available to any students who needed her, even when I interviewed her. Ms. Harmon explained how she has 400 students (freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors) that she supports throughout the year.
