Transgender people are disproportionately affected by workplace discrimination. In 2011, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and the National Center for Transgender Equality released the report "Injustice at Every Turn," which detailed the discrimination faced by transgender and gender nonconforming people. . The report finds that across all employment sectors, 90% of respondents said they had experienced harassment or mistreatment at work or had taken steps to avoid it, and 47% had experienced some sort of negative outcome at work (did not get a job, were denied a promotion, or were fired), including 26% who lost their jobs because they were transgender (Grant et al. 51-53). In the public sector specifically, there are about a million gay and transgender people working in state and local governments, or about 5.4 million people. percent of the public sector workforce (Burns 8).
