  • Essay / Cognitive learning and right versus left brain

Children are exceptional cognitive learners. They have the ability to observe, imitate and retain information through their senses. From zero months to five years, children depend on their cognitive abilities to develop and learn in their environment. In my opinion, children are the best example of the unlimited learning potential of humans. I will discuss what cognitive learning is and how it contributes to learning and whether right brain versus left brain dominance impacts how we use our cognitive skills. What is cognitive learning and why is it vital for humans? The Unabridged Dictionary defines cognitive as “the mental processes of perception, memory, judgment, and reasoning, as opposed to emotional and volitional processes.” Learning is the act or process of acquiring knowledge or skills. After carefully considering both definitions, I have determined that in my opinion, cognitive learning; is the ability to retain, process, analyze information through three of our four senses, sight, hearing and touch. When you think about retaining information, does memory come to mind? Do you just think about how you remember learning to read or how to solve a math problem or even what memory is? Sutton, J. (2010) states that memory is “a diverse set of cognitive abilities by which we retain information and reconstruct past experiences, usually for present purposes.” Sutton's definition highlights the importance of memory for human development and the learning process. Memory determines whether you retain what you have learned; without memory, the past does not exist. Memory is an essential part of the learning process, it allows you to know how to execute and process new information learned. Although the memory is in the middle of paper......, work together to make us who we are. Ultimately, the brain is what motivates us: by developing our cognitive skills, we learn to become productive members of society.ReferencesCognitive. (nd). Dictionary.com full version.
