Problems in the WorldMany children in this world remain silent about the things that happen in their lives. They are abused by their alcoholic parents or harassed at school by their classmates. Some of the things that happen to Junior in this book The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian happen in real life and happen daily. These problems are abuse, alcoholism and bullying. Child abuse is a growing concern around the world. Child abuse is a real problem that happens in the book not only to Junior, but to most of the tribe. For example, in the book Rowdy said that his father would get drunk and beat him and his mother, and so they had to walk around with bruised and bloody faces (Alexie 16). Mr. P also said that when he first started teaching on the reservation, it was thought that they were “eliminating the Indians from the students” (Alexie 33). Both of these phenomena happened in the book, but it is also a major real-world problem. In this case, there was a huge collection of data and of those, most of them reported experiencing at least one form of victimization (Women's 407). This shows that treatment should not only focus on relieving psychological distress, but also the role it can play in increasing the risk of re-victimization (Women's 407). Child abuse should therefore be addressed more because of its seriousness. Child abuse is not the only issue addressed in the book, however. Another problem was alcoholism. This also played an important role in the story. Alcoholism affected Junior greatly because many members of his tribe were alcoholics. Most of the adults on the reservation were alcoholics (Alexie 16). Her grandmother was hit by a drunk driver, which is ironic because she never drank alcohol.
