In The Shipping News by Annie Proulx, the main character Quoyle suffers from a lack of confidence that began when he was very young, being picked on at school and picked on at home by his father and brother. They are the ones responsible for Quoyle's terrible self-image. . Quoyle's experiences have made him think that he can't do anything right and that he will never achieve anything. Quoyle transforms from a quiet introvert to a confident individual after finding gainful employment, bonding with his daughters, and falling in love. By bonding with his daughters, Quoyle changes from a quiet introvert to a confident individual. It was a big day for Quoyle to send Bunny to school, he didn't know what was going to happen and the last thing he wanted was for Bunny to have the same experience as him. Quoyle went to get the rabbit "How did it go?" he asked Quoyle, terrified of getting an answer that would remind him of his school days. To Quoyle's surprise, Bunny said, "That was fun." he was relieved that she had a good time. Quoyle was more than happy that Bunny wasn't like him when he was at school. Bunny's experience at school has changed Quoyle, it's because he knows that maybe school isn't such a bad time, and he doesn't worry too much about Bunny, which gives him less stress and strengthens his self-confidence. Additionally, by bonding with his Quoyle, he is able to defend it. Quoyle and Billy Pretty were hanging out when Billy said, "I doubt a man could raise two little girls alone," Quoyle had no reaction. After hearing what Billy said, Quoyle didn't defend himself, but pretended he hadn't heard anything. ...... middle of paper ...... the school bus. Often, Quoyle was a very introverted person, but when he was around Wavey, he was more relaxed and could really talk to her, which boosted his confidence..
