Essay / Stereotypes of Women and the Media - 1227
Stereotypes of Women and the MediaThe media often shows people in too simple a way, giving the public an inaccurate idea of how a person should behave based on their sex, these are called gender stereotypes. Gender, according to John J. Macionis in his eleventh edition of the book of Sociology, he stated that gender refers to the personal traits and social positions that members of a society attach to being a woman or a man. This will lead to gender stereotypes within the society itself. Gender stereotypes present a conventionally standardized conception or image regarding the typical social roles of men and women, both domestically and socially, or beliefs regarding an individual characteristic and social behavior deemed appropriate for one's sex. This will evoke inequality between the two sexes, man and woman. According to John J. Macionis in his eleventh edition of Sociology, he stated that gender inequality is the unequal distribution of wealth, power and privilege between man and woman. Throughout the world, women generally have lower status and power than men. This might be called gender stratification, although it is sometimes referred to as gender inequality, sexism, patriarchy and female disadvantage (Chafetz, 1990) . The media seems to emphasize gender inequality and stereotypes, especially against women, which has had a great impression on society and has also had several effects on their lives. Inequality and stereotypes against women happen because people tend to imbibe the images they see in the media and which further will create imagination in their minds on how they are expected to behave and present themselves to society. A company itself had to create a middle of paper......the work done by hair stylists, makeup artists and others to make a person look like a star. I believe the media has taken over stereotyping women as weak, vulnerable and overly dependent on men. Women somehow have their own opinions and are capable of standing up for themselves, but the media's emphasis has imprinted images of women as weak in the minds of society. However, the media has also instigated women to harm themselves, just to be almost the same as in the images presented in the media, by going under the knife and risking their precious lives. Women should not be obsessed with beauty, because beauty will disappear sooner or later. It is something inevitable and growing old is just another phase of life that we cannot run away from. People need to be aware of the stereotypes about women in the media because this will essentially lead to inequality among women..
