Essay / The Importance of Primary Education - 1537
Writing Assignment #2All children have the right to free, quality primary education. Fearful of asserting this right, world leaders have made primary education their main development goal under the Millennium Development Goals. Today, this goal seems unattainable in many poor countries. Schooling, particularly for girls, is far from universal and many children leave school before completing primary school. Schoolchildren often do not receive an adequate education because some teachers are poorly trained and underpaid, classes are overcrowded and schools lack basic teaching materials: books, paper and pens. The problem facing many developing countries is: The state lacks the political will and financial resources to meet the educational needs of the population. It is certain that school fees and other costs borne by parents represent a heavy burden for some; otherwise, children receive no education. In an ideal world, primary education should be universal and publicly funded and children should be able to go to school whether their parents can afford it or not. The reason is simple: when a child does not acquire the basic skills to act as a responsible and productive member of society, it is not only the child who is lost, but the entire social body. In fact, failing to educate children could prove more costly than the cost of educating them. If an adult does not have basic skills, it becomes much more difficult to find a well-paid job and thus escape poverty. Schooling girls can also have notable advantages: educated women have a higher income level with significantly lower infant mortality. They also have greater freedom...... middle of paper ...... in need and have helped more than 150,000 people. (Toms, One for One) This result fills us with both pride and humility, and we can, more than ever, try to change our actions so that we can have a positive impact on communities in need. This is a simple example; we explained in class how Toms made it his mission to donate a pair of shoes for every child in need. I believe that in some African countries, having access to shoes is not as beneficial as having proper shelter as UNICEF has made as one of their main missions, or having more food , but I believe that creativity beats talent and that the creativity of Enterprising countries where the state and the people have the means to buy things could be linked between the money paid and the services received. Therefore, people may be willing to pay because they see what their money could do to help others..
