The Iroquois, also known as the Iroquois League, were originally made up of five nations, including the Mohawk, Seneca, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Oneida nations (Richter 1983). As a whole, they originated in the Hamilton-Niagara region of southwestern Ontario and nearby New York State (Noble, 1984), but they did not start out as league. This article will explore the boundaries of Iroquois territoriality, including the range they covered and their region of origin, as well as how the territory is used to make a living and also how it is defended.
