She goes down to get supplies for the café, hopefully seeing her childhood crush, Nathaniel. Matilda's mother doesn't approve of Nathaniel because she thinks he won't get anywhere in life and won't make enough money to support a family. Back at the café, Matilda's mother receives an invitation from the Ogilives, wanting them to join her for tea. Matilda can either stay at home and do household chores all day or go and have tea with her mother. Matilda's mother wants Matilda to go so she can set her up with Mrs. Ogilives' son, Robert. It turns out that Robert had left for school, and so it is only Mrs. Ogilives and her two daughters who are rude to Matilda and stop her from eating the food that had been prepared for them all. During tea, Mrs. Ogilives talks about how one of her daughters, Collette, is engaged to a very rich man. With the subject brought up, Collette gets heated and faints, so Matilda and her mother leave. It was rumored that she had fallen ill and that many other people had mysteriously fallen ill with what they called Jaune.
