  • Essay / Assessment of training needs in the textile and clothing sector...

The aim of this article is to identify the skills gap between employer needs and employee skills in the Indian textile and clothing industry and suggest suitable training modules to fulfill this skill. gap. Recently, many new technologies have come to strengthen the textile industry, but there is not enough skilled labor to support this technology. The textile industry requires a highly skilled workforce to fully utilize technological advancements; otherwise, large investments in upgrading will be wasted. Therefore, it has become urgent to study and propose appropriate solutions to bridge the skills gap. After reviewing the latest research papers and publications, the skill gap in the textile industry has been analyzed in different conventional sectors like spinning, weaving, processing and garments and based on this, training programs and the most appropriate training methodology were suggested. After assessing the skills gap at the micro level, it turns out that there is an urgent need for training at different levels of the workforce hierarchy. The workforce at the bottom of the scale (around 85%) is still deprived of skills development. Upskilling through training is not only an instrument to empower employers, but will also improve social acceptance and employee value. Upskilling can be seen as a tool to improve workforce efficiency and productivity. The Synthetic and Artistic Silk Mills Research Association (SASMIRA) has taken the initiative to minimize this skill gap under the Integrated Skill Development Scheme (ISDS) of the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India.
