  • Essay / A Story of an Hour, by Kate Chopin - 1367

Throughout time, literature has been used to explain and explore the very fiber of the human condition. Modern media has used its ability to reach a vast majority of people to show the oppression of a second-class citizen, as shown in Kate Chopin's "A Story of an Hour." The modern medium that can be seen expressing opinions related to those expressed in Chopin's short story is music. The song “Oppression” by Ben Haper highlights the oppression of people. The archetype of the “oppressed citizen” is present throughout history and society. Chopin uses the literary devices of imagery, symbolism, and dramatic irony to highlight the role of Louise Mallard. The hopes and dreams of oppressed citizens become a faded memory of the things they were unable to achieve, as shown in Chopin's work. Chopin used the archetype of the “oppressed citizen” to show the state of society at the time she wrote “A Story of an Hour.” During this time, women were oppressed citizens throughout Louisiana, as indicated in the cultural context, the patriarchal code favored the husband, leaving many women at the mercy of their husbands and voiceless. Mrs. Mallard was, like many women at that time, completely dependent on her husband and constrained by the laws at that time. The role that Mrs. Mallard is supposed to fill in Chopin's short story may seem simple, but after thinking deeply about the role she is playing. in history, its requirement has become more profound. Her role throughout the story is to enlighten the reader about the difficulties many women faced during this time. During this period, women were oppressed citizens, leaving them voiceless, which is clearly stated in the statement, "the laws of Louisiana have their root...... middle of paper ...... code , the civil code promulgated in France in 1804 to regulate matters of property, marriage and divorce (Kirszner and Mandell 223) We must see some truth in Chopin's short story because it imitates life Everyone has. the hope and dream of doing something great or becoming someone great and living a life without fulfillment is real oppression. Therefore, the hopes and dreams of the oppressed end up becoming a faded memory of things that are not fulfilled. 'they couldn't achieve. Works Cited Chopin, Kate. "The Story of an Hour."
