Essay / A Fatal Love: Romeo and Juliet - 1044
A Fatal LoveOne of the most important aspects of being in a relationship with someone is devoting yourself and your time to each other. Another way to build a strong foundation for a relationship is to give or show consistent support or commitment, also called loyalty. When love is present, so is loyalty. When an individual devotes themselves to another, they also rely on each other to stay side by side, no matter what may come their way. Loyalty to a loved one is not only manifested in life, but also in the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, as seen when Romeo and Juliet get married, Juliet refuses to marry Paris on the orders of her father, Romeo risks his own life. returning to Verona to see Juliet, and when the two lovers commit suicide. Romeo and Juliet decide getting married is a huge risk, considering their family's past. Their mutual devotion is one of the major roles of the play. The Montagues and Capulets have been enemies for eons, so the marriage simply wouldn't be allowed by their families. At the Capulets' ball, Tybalt speaks to his uncle Lord Capulet, at which point he states "uncle, he is a Montague, our enemy". After realizing how much the two families didn't like each other, I thought it was a very, very bold move for Romeo and Juliet to get married. By devoting themselves to each other, they jeopardize their relationships with their families. People believed that their love could help heal the lifelong war between their families. Brother Lawrence said "for all this... middle of paper... this account, it will be many years before I see my Romeo again." (3.5.43-47) As shown here, Romeo is obviously saying that he will not be able to go on without Juliet. Ultimately, there are many risks that can be taken to maintain a loyal relationship with someone. The main goal of the play Romeo and Juliet is to maintain allegiance. This is seen when Romeo and Juliet get married, Juliet refuses to marry Paris, Romeo risks his life for Juliet, and at the end when the lovers commit suicide. If putting each other first means jeopardizing their family relationship, they are ready to seize the opportunity to be together. Nothing would stop Romeo and Juliet from being together, and in the end, the only thing they want is each other. This demonstrates how commitment can require sacrificing other things to stay dedicated to something you love. Being faithful is easy, I
